Misconceptions about Pilates!
Confused by the 'Core'? Puzzled by Pilates?
Some of us are confused by THE CORE and many by PILATES. So here is a view point from a long established Pilates teacher – or ‘are you the woman that teaches that Pilots thing?’
The core isn’t your 6 pack and Pilates isn’t just about strengthening it
– to be honest, trying to strengthen it in isolation is a bit pointless. The core is a coordination of muscles working together to ANTICIPATE the load the spine is about to have placed on it. Those are your pelvic floors, your four sets of abdominal muscles, the deeper stabilising muscles of the spine, your buttock muscles and your diaphragm. When the mobilising muscles move you – like lifting up your shopping, putting your washing in the machine, putting your socks on, picking up a toddler, a heavy plant pot, or doing heavy weights, the CORE is there to provide protection and support.
YES STRENGTHEN THE CORE BUT NOT INSOLATION
In any Pilates class you should be strengthening the core, but most definitely NOT isolation. Each session is about your body moving in and out of different planes of movement, improving joint mobility, tone, posture and alignment. All the things we need in our increasing sedentary lives where we are accepting poor posture as the norm. Move it or lose it.
